Threesome: Adriatica

Threesome: Adriatica - A Double Crown Records Release ...reviewed by Duke Adriatica

I have a total blast listening to music played by bands from other countries. And this band is far out, man. Threesome is from Serbia and it thrills me to know that surf and its related cousins are thriving worldwide. It's just too cool.

Threesome are:
Uros Milkic - Guitars
Petar Zivic - Bass
Jovana Petrovic - Drums

Threesome pumps out power by the truckload. They have the force to make mincemeat out of woofers and tweeters. They also have the chops to complement that force. And their music? It takes their chops and power, combines them with cool twists and turns, and exponentiates the mix to the nth degree.

Threesome's debut full-length CD, Adriatica, is a powerhouse. It delivers 12 tracks of instrumental coolness, offering more than 34 minutes of action, drama and thrills. Surf 'n' hot rod? You bet ... and more to boot.

Chasing The Car Bandits - Slow, ominous riffs give you the feeling that something bad is about to happen. Your suspicions are confirmed when 34 seconds into the tune - BANG - all hell breaks loose. With the power of a Corvette on steroids, Threesome slams it into high gear and the chase is on. Chasing The Car Bandits is a white-knuckle thriller. The neat use of vocal harmonies adds to the intensity and thrill of the chase.

Raked Over - High-energy, high-power, high-velocity tune. Threesome's action-packed dynamite attack in Raked Over will get the blood pumping through your veins at about 200 pounds per square inch of pressure.

GTO Crash - Uros Milkic kicks it off with some reverb drenched double picking, followed by just the right amount of feedback. Jovana Petrovic's tasty drum fill and Petar Zivic's cool bass lines get the GTO fired up and rolling. As it revs through the power band, Threesome injects nitrous into that hungry 389 mill. The white lines on the road are nothing more than little dashes as the GTO tachs out and races toward the inevitable.

First Wave - Powerful number. I can imagine First Wave being the theme song for an adrenaline seeking surfer who is challenging an extremely irate 50-foot wave. He's outta his ever-lovin' mind. That angry 50-footer is too much wave for the surfer dude. It's going to knock him ass-over-teakettle into the soup and bury his brain bucket in the silt below.

Eddie Would Go! - This is a cool surf tune. It has all of the necessary elements, but the thing that really stands out is Threesome's passion. That key ingredient makes things cook. Monstrous power, monstrous musicianship.

Wahine - That surf dudette is something else. She can ride the waves better than most dudes. The sea is calm and I can see her now. She's way out there, waiting for the perfect wave. She's keenly aware of the calm before the storm. Just beyond her is a swell and it's growing. This is what she's been waiting for. She knows it will morph into a big one, perhaps the biggest wave she's ever surfed. The wahine catches it and her ride begins. Things look good so far, but that swell keeps growing and growing. It's become a ferocious, watery monolith and our wahine is at its mercy. She's locked into the monster and it's too late to turn back. Her only hope is to hang on and make the ride of her life.

The power of Wahine reminds me of those surfers who, against all odds and sanity, will try to ride the monster waves and meet the fate that awaits them.

Dancefloor Stalkers - Jovana Petrovic gets this baby going with a thunderous surf beat. Petar Zivic follows with a primo bass riff and Uros Milkic gets things wet with dripping reverb. One mighty glissando later and the stalking begins. Dancefloor Stalkers is a very predatory sounding number. It's eerie, spooky, thrilling and very much a cliffhanger. Be sure to check out that 4+ bar glissando at the 3:00 mark. Very cool.

Beware The Stare - A lot of us have run into his sort. You know, the guy in the bar that's looking for trouble - "Hey man, what the hell are you lookin' at?" - and the fists begin to fly. Beware The Stare captures the essence of barroom and back alley brawls. Tough, mean, don't mess with me.

Glise 581C - If I was on a starship headed for the Glise 581C planet, I can't think of a more appropriate song to accompany my trip than Glise 581C. It has a unique geometrical, exploratory, scientific feel. The perfect tune for an astronomer or space traveler.

Snow Surf - Jovana Petrovic and Uros Milkic open this puppy with some dynamite drumming and guitar slinging. Snow Surf is a double picking aficionado's delight. There's some great bass playing and powerful drumming accompanying that smokin' guitar.

Interstellar Hardrive - An outstanding cover of the Man Or Astro-man? tune. It's balls-to-the-wall action from start to finish. I'm talkin' warp drive all the way. No relenting, no mercy, no prisoners.

Lull - This awesome tune begins with some rad string stroking by Uros Milkic. Jovana Petrovic's captivating drumming adds to the majestic beauty of the song. Very relaxing, very pretty and very intoxicating.

Adriatica is a bodacious CD with something for everyone. It's dripping with oceans of surf rock, exudes the smell of a hot rod on nitrous and is awash in total instro coolness.
