Dogs of the Seas Reviewed by: Justin Hayes The Mullet Monster Mafia are good. They are very, very good. Their claim of being a "Power Surf" instrumental quartet is dead on the money. This is one high-octane, in-your-face, kick-ass band. The Mullet Monster Mafia are: Ed Lobo Lopez: guitar Peter Pedrock: bass Emiliano Ramirez: drums JC Molôncio: trumpet The band is from Brazil. If their music is representative of the local scene, then Brazil is the place to be. Dogs of the Seas is an explosive, all-instrumental album with a wild combination of surf, punk, and hot rod style music. It comes on like a tidal wave and never relents in its ferocity. Break Beach is super high-powered surf all the way. It conjures up the image of a surfer riding a 50-foot wave with a shark hot on his tail. Lunch time. The Wave of Seven Days is a neat surf number. Actually, I'd classify it as rock 'n' roll surf. The riff has a distinctive '60s touch. The excellent trumpet work adds a fab new dimension to their overall sound. Neptune Furys rocks my socks. High-powered, undersea feel to it. It's like I'm being pulled down, down, down into the depths of Neptune's rage. Kick-ass playing. Don't fall off of that surfboard or you're done. Surf No Limits gives a whole new meaning to cool. Great intro, with neat guitar, bass, and drum syncopation. Power, power, and more power. Surfing With the Gypsies has a hot south-of-the-border surf/punk feel. This is a really cool toe-tapper. Their ultra high-octane playing makes me want to find a piñata and beat the hell out of it. Hawaii is a potent surf/hot rod tune. Put a 427 Corvette engine on your surfboard, slap on some wheelie pontoons and head for the water. The band's energy is amazing. Don't these guys ever get tired? Poseidon is a great way to finish off their album. Surfy, lofty, and richly textured, it demonstrates the band's ability to penetrate your imagination and carry you to wherever you may want to go. Dogs of the Seas is one cool album. I had a lot of fun listening to it, but be warned: This album is addictive in a very good way.
