IL Grilletto D'Oro Reviewed by: Justin Hayes Howdy pardner. Why don't y'all climb down outta that thar saddle, light a spell, and have a listen to some of the best instro-western music yer likely to hear this side o' the Pecos. The Dead Rocks are in town. The Dead Rocks are: Johnny Crash: guitars Paul Punk: bass Marky Wildstone: drums IL Grilletto D'Oro is a neat all-instro CD, housing ten spaghetti and other western style tunes. IL Grilletto D'Oro doesn't have any of that watered down, tear-in-your-beer shit. This is ten tracks of western music, the way western music should be played. The diverse mixture of mood-setting tunes keeps the interest level at a peak. It makes me want to trade my motorcycle for a horse and saddle. IL Grande Ballo - Western rock 'n' roll. Great guitar picking with tasty bass and drum breaks make for a lively tune. The chorus is Chuck Berry-esque and very cool. IL Grilletto D'Oro - Big sky feeling. Do you remember Bonanza, High Chaparral and other neat television western themes? IL Grilletto D'Oro captures the mood. Huge guitar sound makes it happen. La Speranza Del Domani - For some strange reason I feel as though I'm on a cloud, floating across the Montana sky. Light and airy tune with some great Have Gun - Will Travel type of rhythm playing. Love it. Cavalcata In Cerca Della Ferrovia - This one reminds me of Ole Buttermilk Sky except for the fact that Cavalcata In Cerca Della Ferrovia kicks some serious butt, especially in the chorus. Great git-pickin'. IL Segreto Della Pietra Distante - He's taking his last walk ... to the gallows. Thought provoking music, very deep, with a touch of the Ennio Morricone style. Duello Veloce - It's hoedown time. Excellent barn dance number. I can just see all of the men pawing at the dirt with their boot heels, getting ready to show each other who's the cock of the walk. Neat tune. La Persecuzione Del Vaso Perduto - Hyper freakin' tune. Forget all of that exercise crap and those ridiculous exercise machines you see advertised on television. La Persecuzione Del Vaso Perduto will sweat off those unwanted pounds in a hurry. I could have sworn I heard Chuck Berry again. I dig that whammy chord at the end. Domenica - Beautiful, lofty number with great guitar and rhythm work. And, as usual, the drumming is spot on and tasty. I live in the boondocks where all we get on the radio is one piece-of-shit country station, so I never turn the damn thing on. If they played music like this I'd leave the radio on all of the time, tune 'em in and never try to change the channel. La Conquista Del Monte Negro - This is one of the best western numbers I have ever heard, bar absolutely none. Richly textured spaghetti style, with some terrific double picking, gives this baby a spot on the apex of western music. Move over Morricone, The Dead Rocks are in town. Libertà - Makes me want to climb back in the saddle and head toward the sunset. Relaxing piece that beckons for wide open places with no fences. IL Grilletto D'Oro is a cool, much welcomed instro-western CD. The Dead Rocks deliver the goods with pinpoint accuracy. IL Grilletto D'Oro will make a convert out of the most die-hard surf fan. Be sure to check it out.
