If your timing and accuracy aren't what you want them to be, here's a little trick that will improve them. It works for any instrument including drums. You'll need a metronome.
Take a song you like that's played at 120 (or faster) beats per minute. Set the metronome to 50 beats per minute. Now play the song. Concentrate on playing in time to the metronome's beat and concentrate on playing each note with accuracy and proper duration. You'll find it's not as easy as it sounds. If you make this routine a part of each practice session, about 15 minutes or so, you'll notice a big improvement in your timing and accuracy in a short while. The slow speed is the key. At normal speeds you might not notice missed notes or bad technique or bad timing. This will develop those areas that are lacking. Don't rush things. It's important that you develop the ability to play songs at these slow speeds as comfortably as you play at faster speeds. Then when you play at faster speeds your timing and technique will be vastly improved. Try it with other songs. Be sure to play at very slow speeds, around 40-60 beats per minute. It works wonders. Good luck and have fun. |
