...by Emma Jade Gunn Awhile back I did a review of Baltimore surf rock band The Swiv-O-Matics' CD Charm City Surfer. Then a package came in Duke's mailbox. Talk about incoming! Woohoo! Two count 'em! two! more Swiv-O-Matic CDs! And that made it a very good day. Summer can hit a surfer girl like a tsunami and waves can break clean and cool, but great music is a year-long rush. The Swiv-O-Dudes not only cut fourteen Balto Rockin' surf tracks on this uber cool CD, they tracked new territory in the surfrock genre. The $10 Stare - Oho, tough chicks gotcha cornered and what are you going to do but stare that lady (?!) down? You could run like hell. Yeah. That's it. That's the ticket. Make a quick exit, stage left. Advice from Emmy. No thanks needed since any woman whose stare is as intimidating as this song is an obvious issue you don't want to deal with. VE7-1111 - A tribute to a Playboy Club gone bye-bye, VE7-1111 is a song and a phone number that should just grow better with age. Hip, fast, fun. The Bad, Bad Girl Of Surf - Girls just want to have fun. THIS BABY ROCKS! It's good to be bad and how about that sugar sweet, hot and cool guitar run? Yikes! Doesn't get much better than this for pumping the energy! The Bad, Bad Girl Of Surf was penned for Catherine Gray and I'm green with envy. Thong Song - Cat "Bikini" Wilson, oh ye of the sultry voice, did that bikini have yellow polka dots or was it ..... girl-to-girl grin ..... a thong? You be BAAAD, girl! I love it! T.W.I.N.E. - Good strong Balto Surf. And that's good. Nuff said! Listen again and again. I, The Swiv - You are bad boys, Swiv-O-Matics! Borrowing from titles after Mickey Spillane classics and doing this great song in one take (live at Invisible) and doing it so, well, majestically! My, my, I love Bad Boys! Walker, Don't - This is. This is. This is. OH! Play it again, Sam. Play it for me. One of the darkest most incredible surf songs I've ever heard!!!!!!!!!! Kam Fong As Chin Ho - Just when you think you can relax with a cool one and breathe, a song like Kam Fong As Chin Ho comes along and you have to shake it. No rest for folks with Swiv-O-Matics tunes shooting flames out of the player. Hot Rod Bunny - Hot Rod Bunny is a classic in the making. Fantastic keyboards. Hang it up, Jerry Lee, Marty Canelli is in town. She Walks On Bars - I have never done this. Honest! Any resemblance between my own sweet and innocent self and that wanton woman who swivel-hipped the barmaid into flight at Coyote Ugly last November is purely coincidental! I really get off on this song. Now, now. Behave yourselves, kids, I mean that in a musical way! The Backwards Cowgirl - Some really nice fx on this cut, including a chuckle. Deep reverb, fuzz it out some, give a lass a chance and watch the waves of music roll. Hey, Mr. Potentate! - The CD insert says this was written after witnessing some Shriners and marching bands. Good grief! What psycho kind of parades do they have in Hampden? A fitting juxtaposition of patriotica and surf with a slick bend at the end makes Hey, Mr. Potentate! a keeper. Great, great song. Scary, scary vision of people who march for clubs. Thanksgiving With Mrs. Bellows - You are sick, boys! Is this really about I Dream of Jeannie's Mrs. Bellows? If it is, she must be one hot charmer because this cut rocks hard time! Boris The Spider - Two words: LOVE IT! Better than The Who! Note to those with a high sensitivity to being offended: The CD insert has some mild nudity. Note to everyone else: Another great one by The Swiv-O-Matics!
