...by Justin Hayes Get Cut by The Razorblades takes you there, way out there, alternating between a roaring wave and a billowy cloud of sounds. It has a tone of lament, of joy, of heady water trips and deeply resonating breakers. Get Cut is filled to the brim with exceptionally good surf music. Everyone, including the purists, will enjoy this CD. The Razorblades are from Germany and they prove that you don't have to be from the U.S.A. to play some very groovy surf rock.
I agree with their assessment 100%. Track one, Fasten Seat Belts, has a sexy opening followed by some very tight and very hip surf music. This track really grooves. Track two, Into the Big Blue burst upon me with real, honest, incredible ocean waves melting into one of the best surf songs I've heard in a long time. This cut has some great juxtapositons of sound that make it stand out in any crowd, and that includes places like Santa Cruz and the North Shore. Coming from the land of Bach and Beethoven, the Razorblades make their country proud. These dudes can play! I'm grooving on their sounds which are billowing like a tsunami out of my speakers. Jellyfish Race and Wake Up Rude Boy! It's Surfing Time! make me glad I invested in new speakers instead of a new refrigerator. When I hear fantastic music, the volume knob gets cranked up and my brain goes into overdrive. Speaking of Jellyfish Race - I know a guy who wrote a computer game called Psycho Panic. In its first incarnation it was called Who Sez or something similar. The minute he called it Psycho Panic it was snapped up by a publisher. That just goes to show that a rose called by any other name isn't necessarily perceived as a rose. Keep the title Jellyfish Race in mind when you listen to the song and I guarantee you'll get a hypo of fun and an almost panicky good time! And keep the mental image of four musicians who can "Baltic Sea" the waves for the trees. One of the tracks on Get Cut by The Razorblades is called Kleiner Mann, was nun? Although I'm lucky if I can say it right in English, my son speaks German. He said the name of this song translates to Small Man, which now? in English. Well, I can think of which way we should go now get this band further into the American system of music so we don't have to head overseas to get their music and see their performances. It would be nice to hop a plane to Germany and catch their tight, clear, hydro sound in a live club setting. They are that good. Their special blend of energy awakens the wild, wild surf in all of us. The Razorblades deserve the accolade they're getting in Germany as well as in Italy, Switzerland and other parts of Europe. When a band is this good it's easy to understand how you can live in Germany, or anywhere in the world, and be a surf nut. I can see these guys going far and riding the wildest wave into surf music history. Watch for them.
