The Dynamic Subarashii is made up of Jim Butler on guitar, Rick Kubly on bass and Steve Dougherty on drums. Their self-titled CD was recorded in 1999 and has twenty-two tracks, including eight originals. A brief twenty-third track consists of the ocean washing ashore. The recordings were made at Allegro Studios in Janesville, WI, with final mixing at Boombox Productions in Madison, WI. The overall quality is excellent.
- TSUNAMI SUNRISE - (Butler, Kubly, Dougherty, Malinson) - 2:41
- The CD begins with an original composition ... and it's a good one. Lively, airy, dreamy and surfy, it can best be described as the perfect soundtrack for daydreams of the beach.
- WALK DON'T RUN '64 - (J. Smith - Forshay Music - BMI) - 2:09
- Excellent cover of The Ventures' surf arrangement of Johnny Smith's classic. Nice to see this one included on the CD. A great surf tune that's absent from the repertoires of too many surf bands.
- THE CRUEL SEA - (M. Maxfield - Metric Music - BMI) - 2:18
- Glossy and powerful. Has a big sound Marketts feel to it. Good track.
- PENETRATION - (S. Leonard - Dorothy Music - ASCAP) - 2:00
- Gets high marks for staying true to the feeling of The Pyramids' release. No bells, whistles or superfluous sound effects here. Just raw energy, drive and excitement. The way it was meant to be.
- TEX-MEX SURF - (Butler, Kubly, Dougherty, McDougall) - 2:08
- Worth the price of admission alone. An awesome demonstration of musicianship, imagination, creativity and power. High velocity double picking, just the right amount of fuzz and tasty whammy work evoke a sense of a predator on the prowl, a la Dick Dale ... the kind that should make Quentin Tarantino take a look. Outstanding original track.
- NUTTY - (Taylor, Edwards, Wilson, Bogle - Dobo Publishing - BMI) - 2:03
- A great job covering The Ventures' guitar treatment of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. The piano/bass combination adds the right amount of boogie woogie to the mix. Excellent track.
- ROCK THE SURF - (Butler, Kubly, Dougherty, Malinson) - 2:52
- Well played original. Reminiscent of the metal and glam, big hair days of the 80s and 90s.
- MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - (Lalo Shifrin - Famous Music - ASCAP) - 2:05
- Excellent guitar and big band type drum work compliment the 60s television classic. Spy aficionados and TV theme lovers will enjoy this track.
- COWBOY SURF - (Butler, Kubly, Dougherty) - 2:58
- Plenty of drovers, horses and cattle a la Rawhide and Ghost Riders in the Sky. The backing vocals are hauntingly beautiful and add a nice touch to the Ghost Riders feeling. Interesting original that works well.
- APACHE - (J. Lordan - Francis, Day & Hunter, PRF - ASCAP) - 2:37
-
A great cover of Jerry Lordan's composition.
- MISIRLOU - (N. Rubanis - Grove Park Music - BMI) - 3:09
-
Excellent double picking throughout insures that there's no mistake it's Misirlou. Plenty of punch and power delivered Pulp Fiction style.
- SLAUGHTER ON TENTH AVENUE - (R. Rogers - Chappel & Co., Inc. - ASCAP) - 1:59
-
Excellent cover of The Ventures' arrangement of Richard Rogers' great piece. It's inclusion on the CD was a pleasant surprise. Well played and true to The Ventures' original 60s release.
- JOURNEY TO THE STARS - (Bogle, Wilson, Taylor, Edwards - Dobo Publishing - BMI) - 1:59
-
Superb job on this Ventures original. Clean, crisp, energetic and exciting, with a lot of high quality double picking.
- BUMBLE BEE TWIST - (From Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee - Arranged by Wilson, Bogle, Edwards - Electron Music - BMI) - 2:28
-
Dynamic Subarashii's cover of The Ventures' guitar arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee is excellent. The guys are tight, tight, tight. Great track.
- THE RUSHIN' BEE - (Butler, Kubly, Dougherty) - 2:11
-
Extremely high energy, almost frenetic original. Wow! I worked up a sweat just listening to it. Has an in-your-face surf/punk/Russian dance feel to it, replete with deep male voices shouting and growling to the music. If you want some high speed double picking, this original track is for you.
- MOONLIGHT OVER MOMBASA - (Butler, Kubly, Dougherty) - 2:47
-
Very much a mood setting piece that brings up images of two lovers dancing on the shore of a tropic isle. The type of music you'd expect to hear in a cabaret somewhere in the South Pacific. Beautiful chord work on the guitar and some nice side sticking and cymbal work on the drums make it happen. Beautiful original.
- OUT OF LIMITS - (M.Z. Gordon - Wrist Music Co. - ASCAP) - 2:05
-
OK... You have got to listen to Jim Butler's playing in the chorus. It's the best chorus guitar treatment on this song that I've ever heard, bar none. Outstanding job by everyone. Great job covering the Marketts hit.
- PIPELINE - (B. Spickard, B. Carman - Downy Music - BMI) - 1:55
-
Opens with the mood inducing guitar glissando and punchy eighth-note rhythm setting the stage. As the first verse begins, the ears pick up on a second lead ... an organ. It makes for a very nice new millennium feel, which remains throughout the piece. A good cover of The Chantays' most definitive of surf tunes.
- RAP CITY - (From Brahms' Hungarian Dance No.5 - Arranged by Wilson, Bogle, Edwards, Taylor - Dobo Publishing - BMI) - 1:42
-
Tight cover of The Ventures' guitar arrangement of Brahms' masterpiece. Excellent lead work. Another demonstration of high caliber musicianship from all of the guys.
- SURF THE CASBAH - (Butler, Kubly, Dougherty, Malinson) - 2:34
-
Cool and unique original that has you envisioning Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves cruising ocean waves on surfboards rather than sand dunes on camels. Open Sesame/Arabian Nights/surf combination with all of the trimmings, including the gong. Good tom-tom work adds to the feel. Makes you want to take up belly dancing. Interesting, imaginative piece.
- SURF RIDER - (N. Edwards - Electron Music - BMI) - 2:10
-
Excellent rendition of The Ventures' tune. Very melodic. Has more of a Marketts feel than Ventures, with a nice big sound.
- SUNSET SURF - (Butler, Kubly, Dougherty, Malinson) - 3:09
-
These guys can play. And they have imagination. And they have creativity. Did I mention that these guys can play? And that they have imagination? And that they have creativity? Outstanding guitar work and captivating rhythmic changes punctuate a great original track. Pass the margaritas, I'm on the beach ... at sunset.
