...by Emma Jade Gunn When I say these guys sizzle, I mean the middle of July five o'clock rush hour in Tucson, Arizona sizzle. The blacktop bubbling, boiling water in the fountains, air too hot to breathe and sun so bright it makes you wince kind of sizzle. Hot. Surf Nation is hot! A highly polished and professional sound mixed liberally with wit and fun makes for a Surf Nation ride on the big wave of music a given. I expected polish from Tom Moncrieff who played with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. I also expected polish from Annie McLoone who, with Moncrieff and Utecht, pulled in a gold record for the single Magnet & Steel which recently made a whole new set of fans when it was featured in the movies Boogie Nights and Deuce Bigelow. Well, what I got was spit shine. I'm talking A#1 high gloss Shinola, baby! And I supplied ample spit from all my droolin' over these rad tunes. Oh, heck, what with the various bandmates of Surf Nation recording for RCA, Rhino and Columbia; playing all over the U.S. and South America; writing songs for the likes of Dolly Parton, Nicolette Larson and Mick Fleetwood and, in general, just being flat out incredible I knew they would be tight. And little ol' me was right! Hot damn they were tight tighter than a freakin' snare drum! Soooo, this girl was totally blown away by Music for Dangerous Activities! Like I said, Surf Nation isn't just good, they SIZZLE! Lock 'n' Dam #5 - A dark call to the Gods of Surfing rumbles toward a classic surfrock sound that resolves itself into more than four minutes of double espresso energy. Smokin'! (Party at the) Sand Bar - Hot willy! This is the kind of 60's beach party you don't want to miss. Ali Baba - Quick, someone! Give me my veils and finger cymbals! A wave-drenched femme could do some major damage to a packed beach with Ali Baba. Step aside, shy girlies this song is an appeal to all of us extroverts out there. Sex Wax - I do not believe this song follows Ali Baba. Together they make for two hot, wet, sultry, bedtime companion songs that are any girl's fantasy come true! I do not believe this song follows Ali Baba. I do not believe this song follows Ali Baba. Sizzle! Grease Monkey - I have a classic Corvette. I have a copy of Surf Nation's Grease Monkey. Gawd, I want to visit this grease monkey's garage! Life is good. Rendevous - Very classy. South of the border clandestine meetings under moonlit palms, tequila sunrise in hand and slow dancing until dawn. Ahhhhh! KnuckleHead - Surf rock attacks trucks and guys that say "shore" when they mean "yes". I think. Well, more than one person I know could kick some serious derriere to KnuckleHead. 'Tis cool! Soweto Surf - Makes me want to surf all the way to Cartagena, Columbia. Unique! Just the way we like it! Curl Rider - Oh, baby! Ride! Perfect surf music! Absolutively perfect! Those drums! To die for ..... just like the incredible guitar runs! Nitro - Dick Dale gave the world Nitro and Surf Nation gives us their super neato-concreto hyper rendition. Go, baby, go!!! Trempeleau - So pretty I had to listen twice ..... just because. Forget the Valium. If Trempeleau doesn't calm your soul, nothing will. Goldfinger - "Nation. Surf Nation." Shaken, not stirred, the Surf Nation clan is perfecto mundo. Listen. You'll love this take of a popular James Bond song. There is a short thirteenth track that's not listed on the CD cover. For a few seconds I thought I was having a feedback flashback to the '60s, but then I remembered I didn't inhale or swallow!
