Lost At Sea 7-inch Release Reviewed by: Duke It's vinyl. Seven inches of magnificent vinyl. Lost At Sea literally is groovy. A huge tip of the hat to FUZZnSURF Records for exploring a medium which had been unceremoniously shit-canned by a bunch of feckless dimwits too many years ago. Lost At Sea gets the highest praise just for reinforcing the fact that Vinyl Is Back! Vinyl grooves, man. It freakin' grooves. Of course, record grooves are just needle-scratch without some bodacious tunes stroking the record player's needle. FUZZnSURF Records knows how to stroke a needle. They picked four very cool, wild-ass surf and garage bands to cut the wax on Lost At Sea. And that's what gives these particular grooves the ultimate vibes. Side A: The Invisible Surfers - Cobra Snake Neck Tie Following a suave introduction by the inimitable Unsteady Freddie, you're in for some classic style, instrumental garage music at its best. With a feeling reminiscent of The Wailers, The Sonics and other great garage bands of the '60s, Cobra Snake Neck Tie is a high energy tune with outstanding guitar picking and terrific drumming. This cut is an absolute gas and a real find for aficionados of the '60s garage band sound. Side A: The Supersonicos - Pipemind Super cool tune. Neat demented voice saying, "Pipemind" kicks off this surfy number. Lots of reverb, fuzz and glissandos. Pipemind is a short tune, less than a minute in length, but it packs one helluva wallop with an abundance of backbone and energy. I would like to hear more from The Supersonicos. If Pipemind is any indication of their abilities, this is a great band. Side B: Pozor Vlak - Brainwave One of the best fuzz and surf bands today, Pozor Vlak delivers another very unique and entertaining piece. Brainwave opens with the sounds of what might be a madman's laboratory. It's easy to imagine that high voltage electrodes are frying someone's brain. A man and woman are wondering what happened to their colleague. Then the fuzz kicks in. Lots of fuzz. Pozor Vlak is known for fuzz and they pour it on in Brainwave. Cool tune and a lot of fun. Side B: The Tommys - Grow Fins Some time back, I had the pleasure of writing about this gem. I've literally heard Grow Fins hundreds of times since then and it just keeps getting better. I stand behind the words I wrote then and now. I love this tune. Extremely cool vocals. The guitar riffs in the verses and picking in the chorus are absolutely fantastic. Great drumming, especially the bass drum work, really kicks this baby into orbit Grow Fins is one of the best rock tunes I've ever heard, bar none. It would have smashed the charts in the '50s and '60s. You've got to get Lost At Sea. Why? This record really is a record. Vinyl + Groovy Tunes = Eargasm. Lost At Sea is a must have for any record collection. Spin that turntable, lower the needle and dig those cool grooves. The past meets the present thanks to the awesome folks at FUZZnSURF Records. |
