When I Finally Scored a Fender Jazzmaster

Fender Jazzmaster Guitar ...by Guitar Bob Ohsiek

In the early '90s I was in an Escondido music store when a real derelict looking old guy came in wanting to swap his old JMAS for a Tele. The music store wouldn't go for it so I snagged him aside and told him I would. I zipped home and brought back a nice Tele I'd just built [$300 in parts]. I'd always wanted a real Surf gtr., especially a '64 Jazzmaster like this.

I met him in his mobile home park. He was a real drinker and had painted the guitar w/ a rattle can of glitter medium dark blue, not even taking off the pickguard or strings, flakes of blue everywhere! What a mess. I stripped, sanded, and gave it primer, lacquer, and clear coat [also buffing as much of the old paint off the knobs and pickguard as I could].

They have the cheap sustain of a banjo, but these things really nail the Ventures and Beach Boy tones.

I can't find the 'before' shot today, but here's the aqua shade it ended up.
