This $100 or less Saga kit axe is still one of my main guitars. Something about the nice neck maybe, though it was bad out of the box and frets needed to be leveled, etc. The old red glitter was getting faded so I stripped it and redid it in blue flake. I paint the body w/ Mod Podge, sprinkle glitter on while it's still wet, let dry, then brush another coat of 'Podge on to seal it in. The finish feels rough but is easy and do-it-yourself... way cheaper than a thick pro metalflake lacquer finish. I could keep piling varnish/lacquer/whatever on top to level it like a Kustom Kar finish but I don't want to kill the exquisite tone of the import Basswood body [snort].
Here's a pic of the stuff I bought at the craft store [called Beverly's over here]. They have jars of every color glitter, too.
I love the cheapo bolt-ons. You can work 'em over and make them good...maybe upgrade pickups or tuners if need be. Or at least use the bodies or necks for some project.
I was playing a black Hohner Strat for a while last year [the 3rd one, in back]. Found it in a want-ad: the dude let me have it for $40! |
